Russians turn the Internet into a theater for economic warfare

Estonia offended some Russians by moving a war monument to a place where it is less visible. Russians, it is not clear whether the Russian government also had a hand in it, responded with massive attacks on Estonian Internet computers, the NYT reports on May 29th 2007.

Perhaps historians will recognize this event as the first battle of the bits. Although Internet attacks are costly for the attacked, this type of "warfare" nevertheless has the tremedous advantage that it is not lethal for people.
